Athletico Paranaense 1949
Atlético Paranaense in 1949 won the Paraná State Championship that year and originated the Hurricane nickname, still the club's main symbol today. The name came from the team's offensive strength during the campaign.
History
Clube Atlético Paranaense was founded on March 26, 1924, in Curitiba, from the merger between Internacional Futebol Clube and América Futebol Clube. From the earliest years, the red-and-black team disputed the protagonism of Paraná football with the capital's main clubs. In 1949, Atlético assembled a team marked by offensive power and a sequence of convincing victories in the Paraná State Championship. The performance was so remarkable that the press and fans started calling that team Hurricane. The campaign ended with the 1949 state title. As decades passed, the nickname stopped identifying only that squad and became the brand of the entire club, used by supporters and incorporated into the identity of current Athletico Paranaense. Therefore, the 1949 team has importance that goes beyond the trophy won: it was the one that created one of the most well-known nicknames in Brazilian football.
