History

Club Athletico Paranaense was founded in 1924 in Curitiba, Brazil, from the merger of local sports associations, and built its identity as one of the greatest clubs in Southern Brazil. Until the early 2000s, the club was known primarily for its state titles. In 2001, under the command of coach Geninho, Athletico Paranaense had a consistent campaign in the Brazilian Championship and reached the final phase. In the final, it defeated São Caetano and won the first Brazilian title in its history, breaking the hegemony of traditional clubs from the Rio-São Paulo axis. Midfielder Kléberson was one of the standout players of that squad and, in 2002, won the world title with the Brazilian National Team at the World Cup in South Korea and Japan. The 2001 title projected the club nationally and opened the way for the modernization of Arena da Baixada and for the structure that would lead it to new achievements in the decades to follow.
