In 2018, Hurricane won the South American Cup by defeating Junior Barranquilla, from Colombia, in the final. It was the club's first international title. The following year, in 2019, Athletico lifted the Copa do Brasil after overcoming Internacional in the final, the club's first Copa do Brasil trophy. Arena da Baixada, the club's stadium, was renovated and served as the venue for World Cup matches in 2014.
