Atlético Clube Goianiense

History

Founded on April 2, 1937, Atlético Clube Goianiense is the pioneer of football in Goiás's then newly-built capital. It was the first champion of the Campeonato Goiano in 1944, beginning a rich history in Center-West football. After decades alternating good state moments and financial difficulties, the Dragon experienced a renaissance from the 2000s onwards. It regained the Campeonato Goiano title in 2007 and secured a sequence of state titles in the following decades, reaffirming itself as a local powerhouse alongside Goiás and Vila Nova. On the national stage, the club won the Serie B of the Brazilian Championship in 2016 and began competing in the top division more regularly. In 2022, it had its best international campaign, reaching the Copa Sudamericana semifinals, with a victory over São Paulo in the first leg. The club plays its home matches at Estádio Antônio Accioly, in the Setor Campinas neighborhood, in Goiânia.
