Atlético Mineiro 1950
Atlético Mineiro in 1950 became known as the Ice Champions after a tour through Europe at the end of that year. The team faced European clubs on icy and snowy fields, conditions very different from what they knew in Brazil.
History
At the end of 1950, just a few months after the World Cup was held in Brazil, Atlético Mineiro undertook a pioneering tour through Europe. At that time, it was rare for a Brazilian club from outside the Rio-São Paulo axis to undertake such a large journey. The Minas Gerais team played against clubs from countries including Germany, Austria, and Belgium, in the depths of European winter and often on snow-covered fields. Because of their adaptation to such different conditions, the squad earned the nickname Ice Champions. The campaign ended with 10 matches: 6 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses. The tour became one of the most remarkable episodes in Atlético's history and is remembered by fans to this day as a symbol of the club's pioneering spirit.
