Atlético Mineiro's 1977 team became eternalized as the "moral champion" of the Brazilian Championship. The team reached the final without losing any match and was defeated by São Paulo only on penalties. The team had striker Reinaldo, the competition's leading scorer.

History

The Brazilian Championship of 1977 was disputed by 62 clubs, the largest edition in the tournament's history. Atlético Mineiro, commanded by coach Barbatana, had an undefeated campaign and reached the final against São Paulo at Mineirão. The final ended in a goalless draw in regular time and was decided on penalties, with São Paulo's victory. As Atlético had not lost any match throughout the entire championship, the fans and press began to call the team the "moral champion" of 1977. The great highlight of the team was striker Reinaldo, leading scorer of the 1977 Brasileirão with 28 goals. The squad also included goalkeeper João Leite and midfielder Toninho Cerezo, names that marked the Atlético generation of that decade. Although it did not win the national title, the 1977 team is remembered as one of the best teams in Atlético Mineiro's history and as one of the main examples of a runner-up that entered the memory of Brazilian football.
