History
In 1980, Atlético Mineiro had one of the strongest generations in its history. The team featured striker Reinaldo, the club's biggest idol at the time, and names such as Toninho Cerezo and Luizinho. The coach was Procópio Cardoso. In the 1980 Brazilian Championship, Galo reached the final against Flamengo. They won the first match 1-0 at Mineirão and lost the second 3-2 at Maracanã. Reinaldo scored twice in the decisive match, but the title went to the Rio de Janeiro team. The refereeing in that match was the target of strong complaints from Atlético fans and the decision was marked as one of the most disputed finals in Campeonato Brasileiro history. On the state level, Atlético confirmed its strength by winning the Minas Gerais State Championship in 1980. This title was part of the sequence of six consecutive championships between 1978 and 1983.
