Atlético Mineiro 1992
Atlético Mineiro in 1992 won the Conmebol Cup, the first international title in the club's history, against Olimpia from Paraguay. The campaign marked Galo's entry into the continental achievements map.
History
Clube Atlético Mineiro was founded on March 25, 1908, in Belo Horizonte, and has black and white as the identity of its fan base. Until the early 1990s, the club had accumulated state and national titles, such as the first Brazilian Championship in 1971, but did not yet have an international trophy. This gap was filled in 1992 with the Conmebol Cup title, a South American tournament organized by the confederation for clubs that did not compete in the Copa Libertadores. In the final, Atlético defeated Olimpia from Paraguay and secured the first international trophy in its history. The Conmebol Cup would be won by the club again in 1997, over Lanús from Argentina. Years later, Galo would expand its continental resume with the 2013 Copa Libertadores and other major titles, but the 1992 achievement remains the inaugural milestone of this trajectory.
