Atlético Mineiro 1997
The 1997 Atlético Mineiro was the team that conquered the Conmebol Cup that year, defeating Lanús, from Argentina. It was the club's second title in the continental competition, after the one won in 1992.
History
Clube Atlético Mineiro was founded in 1908 in Belo Horizonte and built throughout the twentieth century an identity linked to continental competitions. In the 1990s, Galo established itself as one of the Brazilian clubs most present in the defunct Conmebol Cup, a South American tournament disputed by teams that did not participate in the Libertadores Cup. The club had already won the competition in 1992, in the final against Olimpia, from Paraguay. In 1997, Atlético reached the final again, this time against Lanús, from Argentina, the champions of the previous edition, and lifted the trophy for the second time. With the titles of 1992 and 1997, Atlético Mineiro became the greatest winner in the history of the Conmebol Cup, a competition that was replaced by the South American Cup in 2002. The 1997 title is remembered as one of the club's main international achievements before the 2013 Libertadores Cup.
