Sociedad Deportivo Aucas
Historic club from Quito, Aucas is known for its loyal fanbase despite decades without national titles, until winning the Ecuadorian Championship for the first time in 2022.
History
Founded in 1945 in the Ecuadorian capital, Aucas built over decades a strong identity with its fanbase, even without major national achievements in its early years. The nickname 'Papa Aucas' became one of the most traditional in Ecuadorian football. During much of the twentieth century and early twenty-first century, the club alternated between the first and second divisions of Ecuador, being recognized more for the passion of its fanbase than for significant titles, unlike rivals such as Barcelona SC, Emelec, and LDU Quito. In 2022, under the command of Venezuelan coach César Farias, Aucas lived the most glorious season in its history. After a consistent campaign, with a streak of 22 unbeaten matches, the club reached the LigaPro final against Barcelona SC, winning the first leg 1-0 in Guayaquil and drawing 0-0 in the return leg in Quito. With this result, Aucas won its first Ecuadorian Championship in history, 77 years after its founding, and secured an unprecedented berth in the Copa Libertadores of America, marking one of the greatest events in Ecuadorian football in the 2020s.
