The Avaí Football Club is the main club in Santa Catarina and one of the most traditional in southern Brazil. With a stadium by the sea in Florianópolis, the Lion of the Island is a symbol of Catarinense football and has competed in several editions of the elite of the Brazilian Championship.

History

Founded on September 12, 1923 in Florianópolis, Avaí FC grew to become the most popular club in Santa Catarina. Dominant in the Catarinense Championship, the club has dozens of state titles throughout its centennial history. The Ressacada Stadium, inaugurated in 1930 and located on the banks of a mangrove in the capital of Santa Catarina, is one of the most picturesque stadiums in Brazil and the stage of the greatest blue glories. Avaí had its first participation in the national elite in 1973 and returned to Serie A on several occasions, including memorable campaigns in the 2000s and 2010s. The club also stands out for its strong foundation of developing players who were raised to the national and international scene. The rivalry with Figueirense, known as the Classic of the Island, is one of the most heated disputes in Brazilian regional football.
