Estádio da Fonte Nova, opened in 1951 and rebuilt as Arena Fonte Nova in 2013, became the main stage for Bahian football, hosting matches from the 2014 World Cup. The Campeonato Baiano, contested since 1905, is one of Brazil's oldest state competitions and historically dominated by Salvador clubs.
