Club Atlético Banfield

Club Atlético Banfield

Club Atlético Banfield is a traditional Argentine club from Gran Buenos Aires, national champion in 2009. Known for the fervent passion of its fans and for revealing talents to Argentine football, Taladro is a representative of the strength of peripheral Buenos Aires football.

History

Founded in 1896 in the working-class neighborhood of Banfield, in the southern region of Greater Buenos Aires, the club was born among workers and European immigrants and quickly became a symbol of the local community. The team competed for decades in the Argentine Primera División without winning national titles, accumulating a loyal fan base that always filled Estadio Florencio Sola — affectionately called El Nido del Taladro. Banfield's great moment in history came in the 2009 Clausura Tournament, when, under the command of coach Diego Cagna, the club won the only national title in its history. The campaign moved Argentine football and showed that a club with modest resources can defeat the giants. Banfield is also known for its player development policy, revealing talents that later shone in Argentina and abroad.
