Bangu 1966

Bangu squad that won the Carioca Championship in 1966, the club's second state title in history from the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, the first since 1933.

History

Bangu Atlético Clube was founded on April 17, 1904, in the Bangu neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, by workers linked to the factory of Companhia Progresso Industrial do Brasil. The club is one of the most traditional in Rio football and has its home at Moça Bonita stadium. Bangu's first state title came in 1933, in the early era of professionalism in Rio. The second only happened in 1966, when the team reached the top of the Carioca Championship in a final phase disputed on points between the best-placed teams, with the decision being defined at Maracanã. Forward Paulo Borges was the great highlight of that campaign and finished as the competition's leading scorer with 16 goals. The 1966 title remains the club's last Carioca Championship and is still the main reference for the red-and-white supporters. Bangu regained national prominence in 1985, when it reached the final of the Brazilian Championship and lost to Coritiba on penalties.
