FC Baník Ostrava
Baník Ostrava is the main club in the mining region of Czech Silesia and one of the most popular in the country. It was three-time champion of Czechoslovakia and won the Czech Championship in 2003-04.
History
Founded in 1922 as SK Slezská Ostrava, the club underwent several name changes before adopting the Baník identity, a Czech word for miner, in reference to Ostrava's strong coal-mining tradition. For decades, it played its home matches at the traditional Bazaly Stadium and, from 2015 onwards, moved to Městský Stadium in the Vítkovice district. The most successful period came between the 1970s and 1980s, when Baník won the Czechoslovak Championship in the seasons 1975-76, 1979-80, and 1980-81, as well as three Czechoslovak Cups. On the European stage, the club reached the semifinal of the 1978-79 European Cup Winners' Cup, eliminated by Fortuna Düsseldorf. After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, Baník became national champion again in the 2003-04 season and won the Czech Republic Cup in 2004-05. The club revealed striker Milan Baroš, Champions League winner with Liverpool and leading scorer of Euro 2004, who ended his career wearing Baník's shirt.
