Barnsley is an English club from the city of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, founded in 1887 and plays its home games at Oakwell. Its greatest achievement is the FA Cup title in 1912.

History

Barnsley was founded in 1887 by Tiverton Preedy, under the name Barnsley St Peter's, and plays at Oakwell Stadium. The club reached the FA Cup final in 1910, when it lost to Newcastle United after a replay. In 1912, Barnsley won the FA Cup by defeating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in a replay played at Bramall Lane, following a goalless draw in the first match. This remains the club's greatest achievement. Barnsley's only season in the English top division was 1997-98 in the Premier League, which ended with relegation. In 2008, the club reached the FA Cup semi-final after eliminating Liverpool and Chelsea, and lost to Cardiff City. In 2016, Barnsley won the Football League Trophy, now the EFL Trophy, and began alternating seasons between the second and third divisions of English football.
