BATE Borisov
BATE Borisov is the most dominant club in recent Belarusian football history, with 13 consecutive national titles between 2006 and 2018. It was the first Belarusian club to compete in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
History
BATE was founded in 1973 in the city of Borisov, connected to a factory of electrical components for tractors and automobiles, from which the acronym comes. For many years it was a modest club, without prominence in the national championship. Growth came after Belarus' independence. The club won its first national title in 1999, repeated the feat in 2002, and starting from 2006, began a sequence of 13 consecutive championships that lasted until 2018. On the European stage, BATE entered history by competing in the group stage of the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League, the first of a Belarusian club. It returned to the competition in other seasons and in 2012, defeated Bayern Munich 3-1, one of the most remarkable results in its trajectory. In 2014 the club started playing its matches at Borisov Arena, a modern stadium inaugurated in the city. Brazilian midfielder Renan Bressan was one of BATE's standout foreign players during this period.
