Bayer Leverkusen is one of the most consistent clubs in the Bundesliga, historically known for coming close to major achievements without obtaining them — which earned it the nickname 'Neverkusen'. However, the 2023-24 season ended this stigma gloriously, with the club winning its first Bundesliga title unbeaten. The club is sponsored by the pharmaceutical company Bayer, which gives it the unusual nickname of 'The Pharmacists'.

History

Founded in 1904 as a club for Bayer company employees, Leverkusen spent decades as a solid club without major titles. The 2001-02 season was bittersweet: the club finished as runner-up in the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League, cementing the nickname 'Neverkusen'. In 2024, under manager Xabi Alonso, the club finally won the Bundesliga unbeaten — a historic achievement — and reached the Europa League final. The club developed players such as Michael Ballack and Rudi Völler.
