Bayern Munich 2001

Bayern Munich's 2000-01 season was marked by winning the UEFA Champions League by defeating Valencia on penalties in Milan, and also winning the Bundesliga. Managed by Ottmar Hitzfeld, the team featured Oliver Kahn, Stefan Effenberg, and Giovane Élber as key players.

History

Bayern Munich, founded in 1900, entered the 2000-01 season as Germany's most successful club, but still seeking a Champions League title since 1976. The team had Ottmar Hitzfeld as manager and a squad that mixed experience and physical strength, with Oliver Kahn in goal, Stefan Effenberg as a leader in midfield, and Giovane Élber in attack. In the Champions League final, played on May 23, 2001, at the San Siro stadium in Milan, Bayern faced Valencia. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with a penalty converted by Mendieta for the Spanish side and a penalty by Effenberg for the Germans. In the penalty shootout, Bayern won 5-4, with three saves by Oliver Kahn. Shortly before, on May 19, 2001, the team had already secured the Bundesliga in a dramatic finale: a goal by Patrik Andersson in the 94th minute, in a 1-1 draw with Hamburg, denied the title to Schalke 04 in the final moments. The season was completed in November 2001, with the conquest of the Intercontinental Cup over Boca Juniors in Tokyo, thanks to a goal by Samuel Kuffour in extra time.
