History
Beerschot was founded in 1899, in Antwerp, under the name of Beerschot Athletic Club. Throughout the twentieth century, it became one of the most traditional clubs in Belgium and one of the great rivals of Royal Antwerp in the city. The Olympisch Stadion, where the club plays its home matches, was built for the 1920 Olympic Games, held in Antwerp. Beerschot experienced its best phase between the years 1920 and 1930, when it won the Belgian Championship in 1922, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1928, 1938 and 1939. In the following decades, the club also won the Belgian Cup in 1971 and 1979, but lost prominence in the national scene and went through financial difficulties. In 2013, Beerschot went bankrupt. Beerschot-Wilrijk assumed its identity and colors, and the club returned to the Belgian first division in the 2020–21 season.
