Béla Guttmann's Benfica won the European Cup in 1961 and 1962. With this, they interrupted Real Madrid's hegemony and became the first Portuguese club to win the European championship.

History

Under the command of Hungarian Béla Guttmann, Benfica reached the pinnacle of European football. On May 31, 1961, in Bern, they defeated Barcelona 3-2 in the European Cup final and became the first Portuguese club to win the continental championship. The following season, the team gained the reinforcement of young Eusébio, coming from Mozambique. In the final of May 2, 1962, in Amsterdam, Benfica defeated Real Madrid 5-3, with two goals from Eusébio, and won back-to-back European championships. The captain José Águas and midfielder Mário Coluna were other key names in the squad. Guttmann left the club after winning back-to-back championships, and his departure gave rise to the famous legend of 'Guttmann's curse'.
