History

The Dynamo football in Berlin was born from SC Dynamo Berlin, created in 1954 with the transfer of players from Dynamo Dresden. On January 15, 1966, the football section became an independent club, the Berliner Fußball Club Dynamo (BFC Dynamo), linked to the Dynamo sports association, which had the head of the Stasi, Erich Mielke, as its patron. Between the 1978-79 and 1987-88 seasons, BFC Dynamo won ten consecutive editions of the Oberliga, the first division of East Germany, a record of consecutive titles in the country. The club's hegemony, linked to the state security apparatus, was surrounded by questions about favoritism in refereeing and transfers. In its golden phase, the team played its home matches at Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark and competed in European club competitions throughout the 1980s. After German reunification, the club changed its name to FC Berlin in 1990 and returned to the name BFC Dynamo in 1999. Since then, it has lost ground in professional football and plays in the regional divisions, maintaining a loyal fan base and a strong historical identity.
