Boavista FC
Boavista FC is a historic Portuguese club founded in 1903 in Porto. Famous for its distinctive black and white checkered uniform, the club is the sole champion of the Portuguese First League outside the trio of Benfica, Porto and Sporting, an achievement conquered in the 2000-01 season.
History
Founded on August 1, 1903, Boavista FC built its identity over more than a century of Portuguese football. Based in the Boavista neighborhood in Porto, the club has always represented a popular alternative to the three major forces in Portuguese football. The greatest moment in the club's history came in the 2000-01 season, when Boavista conquered the Portuguese First League, breaking decades of hegemony by Benfica, Porto and Sporting. This historic achievement is celebrated as one of the greatest feats in Portuguese football, and the club became a reference that the impossible was possible in the national scene. The Estádio do Bessa Século XXI, with a capacity of over 28,000 fans, is the club's modern home. Boavista also won the Portuguese Cup on three occasions — in 1975, 1976 and 1997 — and competed in European competitions, representing Portuguese football on the continent. In the first half of the 2000s, the club faced serious difficulties, including sporting sanctions and relegation, but recovered and returned to competing in the main Portuguese competitions, keeping alive the flame of its glorious history.
