History
Under the command of Carlos Bianchi, Boca Juniors assembled one of the strongest teams in its history in the late 1990s. In 2000, the club won the Copa Libertadores after defeating Palmeiras in the final on penalties at Palestra Itália. In the final of the 2000 Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo, Boca defeated Real Madrid 2-1, with two goals from Martín Palermo. The team had Óscar Córdoba in goal, Jorge Bermúdez and Walter Samuel in defense, Juan Román Riquelme as midfielder and Palermo and Guillermo Barros Schelotto in attack. Bianchi's cycle also yielded the Copa Libertadores titles of 2001 and 2003 and the Intercontinental Cup of 2003, consolidating Boca as a continental powerhouse.
