Botafogo 1948

History
Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas, founded in 1904 in the Botafogo neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, had General Severiano as its stadium at the end of the 1940s. The club was already one of the major teams in the Rio de Janeiro State Championship, which was the main competition in Brazilian football at that time. In 1948, Botafogo won the Rio de Janeiro State Championship title. The team had as its great star the striker Heleno de Freitas, one of the greatest goal scorers in the club's history, who played for Botafogo between 1939 and 1948. The year 1948 also marked the arrival of Nilton Santos, a left-back who would become one of the greatest names in the club's history and the Brazilian National Team, and who would remain at Botafogo for more than a decade. The 1948 Rio de Janeiro title is remembered as one of the landmarks in the trajectory of the Glorious One before the championship generation of the 1950s and 1960s.
