Botafogo 1962

The Botafogo of 1962 was one of the greatest teams in the history of Brazilian football. It brought together Garrincha, Nilton Santos, Didi, Zagallo and Amarildo, players who were part of the two-time World Cup-winning national team in Chile. It won the Carioca Championship and the Rio-São Paulo Tournament that year.

History

The early 1960s were a golden period for Botafogo, which had one of the most talented squads in the country. The team featured Garrincha, Nilton Santos, Didi, Zagallo and Amarildo, alongside striker Quarentinha, and established itself as one of the main forces in Rio football. In 1961 the club won the Carioca Championship and, in 1962, repeated the title, winning the state championship twice. That same year it also won the Rio-São Paulo Tournament, one of the most contested competitions on the national calendar at the time. The club's performance had a direct impact on the Brazilian national team. At the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile, Brazil won the world championship for the second time with five Botafogo players in the squad: Garrincha, Nilton Santos, Didi, Zagallo and Amarildo. Garrincha was named the best player of the tournament, and Amarildo replaced the injured Pelé from the third match onwards. Botafogo 1962 remains a reference for technical quality and collective attacking play in the history of the black-and-white club.
