History

Botafogo reached 1968 after a decade marked by great achievements, with a squad that brought together stars revealed or established at General Severiano. Under the command of Zagallo, the club won the Rio de Janeiro Championship in 1967 and repeated the feat in 1968. The Taça Brasil, contested between 1959 and 1968 by state champions, had its last edition in 1968. Botafogo won the title by defeating Fortaleza, the finalist of that year, and ended the competition's history as champion. In 2010, the CBF officially recognized the Taça Brasil champions as Brazilian champions. As a result, the 1968 title came to be listed among Botafogo's national achievements, alongside the Brazilian Championship of 1995. Jairzinho, Gérson and Paulo César Caju were part of this squad, which helped establish the club as one of the main references of Brazilian football in that decade.
