The Botafogo of 1993 was marked by winning the Copa CONMEBOL, the club's first international title. The final was against Peñarol, from Uruguay.

History

Botafogo Football Club and Regatas was born from the merger, in 1942, of Botafogo Football Club (founded in 1904) with Club de Regatas Botafogo. In the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s the club had legendary teams, with names like Garrincha, Nilton Santos and Didi. After the 1968 Carioca Championship title, the club went 21 years without winning the Carioca Championship. This drought ended in 1989, and the Glorious one returned to regional prominence. In 1993, the team competed in the Copa CONMEBOL, a South American club tournament organized by the continental confederation. Botafogo reached the final and defeated Peñarol, winning the first international trophy in its history. The 1993 title opened the way for the victorious phase of the decade. Two years later, in 1995, the club won the Brazilian Championship.
