Botafogo 1997

Botafogo squad in the 1997 season, Carioca Championship champion. It was the club's first state title since 1990.

History

Botafogo arrived at 1997 still under the prestige of the 1995 Brazilian Championship title, conquered two years earlier. The club sought to return to victory in the state scene, where it had not lifted the trophy since 1990. In 1997, the black and white team conquered the Carioca Championship, the 17th state title in the club's history. The conquest ended a seven-year drought in Rio de Janeiro and put Botafogo back at the top of the state championship. The 1997 title is part of the sequence of conquests by the club in the 1990s, alongside the 1995 Brazilian Championship, and reinforced the black and white tradition in Carioca football.
