In December 2012, Botafogo announced the signing of midfielder Clarence Seedorf, four-time champion of the UEFA Champions League, and the 2013 season was built around the Dutch veteran. The squad also featured goalkeeper Jefferson, a club idol and one of the team's pillars, and striker Elkeson. In 2013, Botafogo won the Rio de Janeiro Championship, their 21st state title in history. Seedorf stayed at the club until the end of that year and then left the pitch to start his coaching career at Milan.
