Botafogo 2023
Botafogo 2023 led the Brazilian Championship with a wide advantage for much of the season, but lost the lead and finished in fifth place. The campaign secured a direct spot in the group stage of Copa Libertadores 2024.
History
Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas was founded in 1904 in Rio de Janeiro, and in 2023 was in its second year under the Football Limited Company model, with John Textor as the main investor. In the 2023 Brazilian Championship, the team assumed the lead in the first rounds and opened up a 13-point advantage over the second-placed team. This performance positioned the club as the title favorite, which had not been won since 1995. In the final stretch, a sequence of poor results caused the team to lose the lead. Botafogo finished the championship in fifth place, which guaranteed them a direct spot in the group stage of Copa Libertadores 2024. The episode was marked as one of the biggest negative turnarounds in the era of the points system. In 2024, the club recovered and won Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Championship.
