Botafogo Sport Club
Founded on November 1st, 1914 in Salvador by a sergeant from the Fire Department, Botafogo Sport Club is one of Bahia's historic clubs, distinct from the more famous Rio de Janeiro Botafogo. After decades of financial difficulties, the club relocated to the interior and today represents the city of Senhor do Bonfim.
History
The red and white colors of Botafogo-BA were chosen in tribute to the firefighters' uniforms, the profession of founder Antônio Valverde Veloso. In the 1920s, the club made history by providing defender Mica to the Brazil national team at the South American Championship in Uruguay, becoming the first club in the Northeast to have a player selected for the national team, a period in which it also won the Bahia state championship twice (1922 and 1923). With seven Bahia State Championship titles throughout its history, Fogo is the fourth most successful club in state competition, although it has not won the tournament since 1938. The financial crisis led the club to suspend its football department between 1990 and 2011. In search of survival and institutional support, the board sought a partnership in the interior of Bahia, and in 2021 the club moved to Senhor do Bonfim, resuming professional activities at Estádio Antônio Pedro Amorim Duarte. Since then, Botafogo Bonfinense, as it is also known, competes in state competitions trying to revive the ancient glories of the red and white shield.
