Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas
Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas is one of the most traditional clubs in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, known for the solitary star and its black and white striped shirts. It revealed legends such as Garrincha, Nilton Santos and Jairzinho. In 2024 it won the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Championship.
History
Botafogo was born from the merger, on December 8, 1942, between the Club de Regatas Botafogo, founded in 1894, and the Botafogo Football Club, created on August 12, 1904. The year 1904 is the reference for the club's football history, which has always been based in the Rio neighborhood of Botafogo. The period of greatest glory came between the 1950s and 1960s, when the team brought together Garrincha, Nilton Santos, Didi, Jairzinho, Gérson and Zagallo. This squad yielded Rio state championships and made the club the foundation of several achievements by the Brazilian national team in the 1958 and 1962 World Cups. On the national stage, the club was champion of the 1968 Brazil Cup and the 1995 Brazilian Championship. It also won the 1993 Copa Conmebol, the first official international title in its history, and has 21 titles of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship. From 2022 onwards, Botafogo's football began to be managed as a Football Public Limited Company (SAF). In 2024, the team won the Copa Libertadores, defeating Atlético Mineiro 3-1 in Buenos Aires, and was Brazilian champion, ending a long wait for significant titles.
