History
Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas was born from the merger, in 1942, between Botafogo Foot-Ball Club (founded in 1904) and Clube de Regatas Botafogo. The club became one of the main protagonists of Brazilian football from the 1930s to 1960s, forming the so-called 'Lone Star', symbol stamped on its shield. In the 1950s and 1960s, Botafogo experienced its golden era, revealing and counting on players such as Garrincha, Nílton Santos, Didi and Jairzinho, forming the base of the Brazilian National Team that won the World Championship in 1958 and 1962. The club won the Rio de Janeiro State Championships in 1957, 1961, 1962 and 1968, in addition to informal national titles of the time. After decades of financial and administrative difficulties, the club experienced a rebirth starting in 2010, with the arrival of investors and management reforms. The recent peak came in 2024, when Botafogo won the Brazilian Championship and the Copa Libertadores in the same year, under the command of coach Artur Jorge, consolidating one of the greatest moments in the club's history. With a passionate fan base and historical rivalry with Flamengo, Vasco and Fluminense, Botafogo is recognized for its traditionalist identity and for the formation of great talents that marked world football.
