The tragedy marked the history of the club and English football and is remembered every year. Bradford had won the Third Division title in 1984-85, and the match was a trophy celebration. In the 1998-99 season, the club finished in second place in the second division and returned to the English elite, after 77 years. The club faced financial difficulties in the following years and even entered administration. In 2013, it reached the final of the English League Cup, losing to Swansea City 5-0, and was promoted to League One through the League Two playoffs, defeating Northampton Town 3-0 at Wembley.
