Bragantino 1990-1991

The Bragantino of 1990 and 1991 was the best generation of the club from Bragança Paulista. Under the command of Vanderlei Luxemburgo, the team was São Paulo state champion in 1990 and runner-up for the Brazilian championship in 1991.

History

Atlético Bragantino Club was founded in 1928 and, until the end of the 1980s, had little national projection. The turnaround came with an ambitious sports project, which brought the team from the interior of São Paulo to the elite of Brazilian football. The club won the title of the Brazilian Championship Series B in 1989. In 1990, under the command of Vanderlei Luxemburgo, Bragantino surprised the major clubs of the capital and was champion of São Paulo. It was the most important achievement in the club's history up to that point. The team featured midfielder Mauro Silva, who would later become World Cup champion with the Brazilian national team in 1994. In 1991, the team repeated the good campaign and reached the final of the Brazilian Championship. It was overcome by São Paulo, of Telê Santana, and finished as runner-up. It was one of the greatest campaigns by a club from the interior of São Paulo in the tournament's history. The generation of 1990-1991 is remembered as the peak of Bragantino. The club, which years later became known as Red Bull Bragantino, maintained the identity of Bragança Paulista and returned to compete in the elite of Brazilian football.
