History
Bristol City was founded in 1894 under the name Bristol South End and adopted the name Bristol City in 1897 upon turning professional. Since 1904 it has been based at Ashton Gate, which now has a capacity of around 27,000 spectators. The most glorious period of the club's early history came in the 1900s: Bristol City were Second Division champions in 1905–06, finished as runners-up in the First Division in 1906–07, and lost the 1909 FA Cup final to Manchester United. After decades in the lower divisions, winning titles in the Third Division South in 1922–23, 1926–27, and 1954–55, the club returned to the top flight in 1976, after 65 years away. In 1977–78 they won the Anglo-Scottish Cup. In recent decades, Bristol City won the Football League Trophy in 1986, 2003, and 2015. In 2014–15 they were champions of League One with 99 points, a club record, and returned to the Championship, where they currently compete in the English second division.
