Budapest Honvéd

Budapest Honvéd is one of Hungary's most traditional clubs and was the foundation of the legendary Hungarian team of the 1950s. Its squad brought together Puskás, Kocsis, Bozsik and Czibor.

History

The club was founded in 1909 as Kispest Athletic Club, in the Kispest neighborhood in Budapest. In 1949, it came under the control of the Hungarian Army and adopted the name Honvéd, which means defender of the homeland. In the first half of the 1950s, Honvéd brought together superstars such as Ferenc Puskás, Sándor Kocsis, József Bozsik and Zoltán Czibor, who formed the core of Hungary's national team at the time. The team dominated the national championship and won titles in 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955. The 1956 revolution and the departure of several players from the country weakened the team. Puskás went to Real Madrid, and Kocsis and Czibor moved to Barcelona. The club returned to being champion in the 1980s and regained the title in 1993 and 2017. Honvéd plays its home matches at the Bozsik Aréna, in Kispest, named in honor of József Bozsik, a symbol of the club.
