Burnley FC
Burnley FC is one of the most traditional clubs in English football, founded in 1882 and a founding member of the Football League in 1888. The 'Clarets' won two English Championship titles — in 1921 and 1960 — and experienced a remarkable renaissance in the 2010s, reaching the UEFA Europa League.
History
Founded in May 1882 in the town of Burnley, in Lancashire county, the club was one of twelve founding members of the Football League, the world's first professional football league, created in 1888. Since its foundation, Burnley has played its home matches at Turf Moor, opened in 1883, one of the oldest stadiums still in use in professional football. The club experienced its first golden era in the early twentieth century: it won the FA Cup in 1914 and the First Division title in 1920-21. The second English Championship title came in 1959-60, when Burnley surpassed Wolverhampton Wanderers in the title race, confirming itself as one of English football's powerhouses of that era. Over the following decades, Burnley oscillated between divisions in English football, even falling to the fourth division in the 1980s. The reconstruction was patient and based on solid work, until the club progressively returned to the top divisions. Under the command of manager Sean Dyche, Burnley experienced an extraordinary renaissance in the 2010s. The club won the Championship title (second division) in 2015-16 and consolidated itself in the Premier League, even qualifying for the UEFA Europa League in 2017-18 — a remarkable achievement for a club of its stature. In 2022-23, it won the Championship again before returning to the English elite.
