Campo Grande Atlético Clube is a club from the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, founded on June 13, 1940. Its greatest national achievement was winning the Silver Cup in 1982, a competition equivalent to Serie B of the Brazilian Championship.

History

Campo Grande Atlético Clube was founded on June 13, 1940, in the Campo Grande neighborhood, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, as the successor to an already extinct suburban association. In the first two decades, it competed in the Autonomous Department, where it won titles in 1953 and 1959. In 1960, the Ítalo del Cima Stadium was inaugurated, built on land donated by the Ítalo Del Cima family. The inaugural match, on April 29, 1960, ended with Campo Grande's 2-0 victory over Oriente, and the first goal in the stadium was scored by Naldo Pires. In 1962, the club was finally accepted in the elite of the Championship of the former state of Guanabara. The peak came in 1982, when the club was champion of the Silver Cup, equivalent to the national Serie B, with the best attack in the competition (39 goals) and top scorer Luisinho das Arábias, author of 10 goals. The attendance record at Ítalo del Cima, 16,842 paying spectators, was set on April 21, 1982, in a 3-0 victory over CSA. After the period of greatest prominence, the club went through difficult phases in the lower divisions of Rio de Janeiro football, but maintained strong identification with the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro and its century-old stadium in the neighborhood.
