Canto do Rio Foot-Ball Club

Canto do Rio Foot-Ball Club

The most traditional club in Niterói, Canto do Rio competed for decades in the elite of the Carioca Championship, being for a long time the only representative of the city among Rio de Janeiro's top clubs. Today it maintains activities as a social club and developer of athletes.

History

Canto do Rio Foot-Ball Club was founded in 1913 in Niterói, then capital of Rio de Janeiro state. The club grew rapidly in the Fluminense scene and earned the right to compete in the Carioca Championship, becoming the main representative of Niterói in Rio's elite football. Between the 1930s and 1960s, Cantusca regularly faced Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco, Botafogo and America in the Carioca first division, playing their matches at Caio Martins Stadium in Icaraí. It was during this period that the club experienced its sporting peak, developing players for Rio's major clubs and consolidating a loyal fan base in the city. From the 1960s onwards, with increasing professionalization and financial difficulties, the club lost its place in the elite and gradually moved away from professional football. Canto do Rio remains active as a social club in Niterói, with work in youth categories and sporadic participation in the lower divisions of Carioca football.
