Cardiff City FC

Cardiff City FC

Principal club of Wales, competes in the English football league system. It is the only non-English club to have won the FA Cup, an achievement reached in 1927.

History

Cardiff City was founded in 1899 in the capital of Wales and has been part of the English football league system since the early 20th century, an unusual situation that defines its identity: a Welsh club competing among English clubs. Its greatest moment came on April 23, 1927, when it defeated Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley and won the FA Cup — to this day the only time the FA Cup has left English territory. The club also accumulated dozens of victories in the Welsh Cup throughout the 20th century, which earned it several participations in European competitions. In recent football, Cardiff won the EFL Championship in 2012-13 and played in the Premier League in the 2013-14 and 2018-19 seasons. It plays its matches at Cardiff City Stadium, opened in 2009 as a replacement for the historic Ninian Park, and maintains with Swansea City one of the most intense rivalries in Britain, the Welsh derby.
