Calcio Catania
Calcio Catania is the main football club in Catania, Sicily, founded in 1946. It competed in Serie A for eight consecutive seasons, from 2006-07 to 2013-14, and plays its home matches at Stadio Angelo Massimino.
History
Club Calcio Catania was founded on September 24, 1946, following the merger of Catanese and Virtus at the end of the 1945-46 season. The club has earlier roots, linked to a sports association created in 1908, but the modern club recognizes 1946 as its founding landmark. Catania was promoted to Serie B for the 1948-49 season and, in 1953-54, was champions of the division, securing promotion to Serie A. After decades alternating between divisions, the club returned to the top flight in 2006 and remained in Serie A until 2014. During that period, the best campaign was an eighth-place finish in 2012-13. The stadium is the Angelo Massimino, known as Cibali until 2002, with a capacity of approximately 21,000 supporters.
