Catuense is a football club from Catu, located in the interior of Bahia, founded on January 1, 1974. It was one of the powerhouses of Bahian football in the 1980s and 1990s and competed in the first division in 1984.

History

Catuense was founded on January 1, 1974 by Antônio Pena and nine other partners in the city of Catu, Bahia. Its colors—yellow, red, and black—honor the municipality, and the club's mascot is the Great Kiskadee. The municipal stadium, named after the founder Antônio Pena, has capacity for about 8,000 fans. In the 1980s and 1990s, the club was a major force in the Bahian interior and achieved good results in national championships. The highlight was its participation in the first division of the Brazilian Championship in 1984, when it finished in 40th place. Catuense also reached four finals of the Bahian Championship but never won the state title. The club's most notable titles are the Bahia State Cup in 2001 and the Bahian Interior Championship in 2004. In the 2004 Copa do Brasil, Catuense defeated Atlético Mineiro 4-2 away from home, but was eliminated after losing 5-1 at home in Catu. The club's youth academy produced important players for Bahian football, such as Bobô, regarded as one of the greatest players in Bahian history and a Brazilian champion in 1988 with Bahia, and Vandick. Since 2016, Catuense has not competed in professional competitions and focuses its activities on player development.
