CD Tenerife

CD Tenerife

Spanish club from the Canary Islands, traditional Second Division participant that gained prominence in the 1990s for battling Real Madrid in La Liga title races.

History

Club Deportivo Tenerife was founded in 1922 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, and plays its home matches at Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium. The club's golden era came in the 1990s, when under Jorge Valdano and later Jupp Heynckes, it emerged as a top La Liga contender. In 1992 and 1993, Tenerife defeated Real Madrid in the final matchdays, gifting the titles to Barcelona in consecutive seasons — moments that became legendary in Spanish football history. In the 1996-97 season, the club achieved its finest European campaign, reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals before being eliminated by Schalke 04, the competition's eventual champions. Stars like Fernando Redondo and Juan Antonio Pizzi wore the Tenerife colors during this golden period. Since then, Tenerife has alternated between the top and second tiers, maintaining a constant presence in Segunda División while regularly competing in promotion playoffs, as in the 2021-22 season when they reached the final.
