History

Club Atlético Central Córdoba was founded on July 9, 1919 by railway workers in the city of Santiago del Estero, in northern Argentina, which originated its nickname 'El Ferroviario' (The Railwayman). For much of its history, the club competed in the lower divisions of Argentine football, being a reference point for interior football in the country. From the 2010s onwards, the club underwent a process of institutional and sporting restructuring that led it to gradually climb the divisions of Argentine football, reaching the Primera División in 2019, a historic achievement for Santiago del Estero football. Since then, Central Córdoba has consolidated itself as a regular competitor in the Argentine elite, surprising in continental competitions and becoming a symbol of perseverance for interior clubs, historically dominated by the major Buenos Aires clubs. The club maintains a strong regional identity and is a source of pride for the province of Santiago del Estero, contrasting with the equally traditional (though smaller) Club Atlético Mitre, its local rival.
