Team from Chapecó, state of Santa Catarina, a symbol of overcoming in Brazilian football. In November 2016, the LaMia 2933 flight tragedy claimed 71 lives on the eve of the Copa Sudamericana final. The football world united in solidarity and CONMEBOL awarded the title to Chapecoense. The club rebuilt itself and returned to Serie A in 2020.

History

Founded on May 10, 1973 in Chapecó, Santa Catarina, Chapecoense spent decades in lower divisions before beginning its meteoric rise in the 2010s. In 2016 it played the Copa Sudamericana final, but on the night of November 28 the LaMia 2933 flight crashed near Medellín, killing 71 people. Only three players survived: Alan Ruschel, Jackson Follmann and Neto. Atlético Nacional requested that the title be awarded to Chapecoense, and CONMEBOL accepted. The club rebuilt itself with worldwide support and in 2020 conquered the Serie B.
