Charlton Athletic FC

Charlton Athletic FC

Charlton Athletic is a club from south London founded in 1905. With a history that includes an FA Cup title in 1947 and a notable stint in the Premier League during the 2000s, the club is also recognized for one of the most inspiring comeback stories in English football.

History

Founded on June 9, 1905 in the borough of Charlton, in southeast London, the club built a strong identity among the communities of the English capital. The greatest achievement in its history came in 1947, when Charlton Athletic won the FA Cup by defeating Burnley in the final played at Wembley. In the 1980s, the club faced an existential crisis: debts and structural problems forced the abandonment of The Valley in 1985, forcing Charlton to play at other clubs' stadiums for years. The popular campaign 'Voice of The Valley' mobilized supporters and resulted in the return to the stadium in 1992, one of the most remarkable episodes in modern English football. Under the management of Alan Curbishley, Charlton rose to the Premier League in 1998 and remained in the elite of English football for several consecutive seasons in the early 2000s, competing with much wealthier clubs. The club developed and signed players of European standard during this period. After relegation in 2007, Charlton alternated between English divisions and faced instability in management. The Valley, with a capacity of over 27,000 supporters, remains a permanent symbol of the identity of the London club.
