History

The club was founded in 1911 under the name Stade Clermontois. In 1984, it merged with AS Montferrand and became known as Clermont Football. In 1990, it adopted its current name, Clermont Foot 63, in reference to the number of the Puy-de-Dôme department. For decades, Clermont competed in the lower divisions and the French second division. One of its greatest moments came in the 1996/97 French Cup, when it eliminated Paris Saint-Germain and only fell in the quarterfinals against Nice. In 2014, the club gained international attention by hiring Portuguese Helena Costa to manage its men's professional team, a pioneering case in top-level professional football. The greatest sporting achievement came in 2020/21, when the team finished Ligue 2 in second place and secured an unprecedented promotion to Ligue 1 under manager Pascal Gastien. Clermont competed in the French top flight in the 2021/22, 2022/23, and 2023/24 seasons and was relegated in 2024. Home matches are played at Stade Gabriel-Montpied, which has a capacity of approximately 12,000 spectators.
