Club Atlético Progreso
Progreso is a traditional club from the La Teja neighborhood in Montevideo. Its greatest achievement is the 1989 Uruguayan Championship title, won when the club was presided by Tabaré Vázquez, who would later become president of Uruguay.
History
Club Atlético Progreso was founded in 1917 in the working-class La Teja neighborhood, in the western region of Montevideo, on the banks of the Pantanoso stream. That's where the nickname Gaucho del Pantanoso comes from. The club plays its matches at Parque Abraham Paladino and wears yellow and red colors. Throughout most of its history, it alternated between the first and second divisions of Uruguayan football. In 1989, Progreso won the Uruguayan Championship. It was the club's only national title and one of the rare occasions when a team outside the Peñarol–Nacional axis won the league. At that time, the club's president was physician Tabaré Vázquez, who later became mayor of Montevideo and president of the Republic of Uruguay. The connection with Vázquez and the 1989 title are the main marks of Progreso's history.
